Coats for Kids kicks off today, celebrating 30 years since former WTHR weatherman Bob Gregory began his crusade to make sure that every child in Indianapolis who needed a warm winter coat would have one. This event marks a time with the Central Indiana community comes together to help families who are struggling to make ends meet and cannot afford to buy new winter coats for growing children. The Salvation Army is partnering with WTHR, Tuchman Cleaners, Old National Bank, and Two Men and a Truckthroughout September and October to collect, clean, store, sort, and distribute thousands of new and gently used coats to children of all ages – from the tiniest newborns to towering teens.
Coat collections begin on Labor Day – September 5th – at Central Indiana Tuchman Cleaners and Old National Bank locations. New and gently used coats can be dropped off at any location until October 8. The Columbia Club, located on Monument Circle in downtown Indianapolis, is also collecting coats from September 5 through October 10. Other organizations and churches around the city and donut counties are collecting hats and gloves, which will also be sent home with children on the day of the event.
If you are unable to get to a drop off location, but would still like to make a donation, just text GiveACoat to 41444 to get a link to our secure Online Coat Shop. With every $25 donated, The Salvation Army will be able to purchase at a reduced wholesale price one winter coat for the distribution event on October 15. This is a great way to ensure that we can fill in any size or gender gaps after the donated coats are sorted, reducing the chance that a child will not be able to find a coat that fits when they visit the Indiana State Fairgrounds on distribution day.
We are also recruiting volunteers for set-up at the fairgrounds (October 12-14) and for the day of the event (October 15). If you (or a group to which you belong) are interested in giving your time to help make the event a big success, contact our Volunteer Coordinator, Brittany Faulkner, at 317-224-1010 or[email protected].
Hundreds of thousands of children have experienced first hand the amazing generosity of their community through the Coats for Kids program. Together we can make a difference in Central Indiana, one warm child at a time!
