On November 27, Associates and managers at the nearly 4,000 Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club Stores across the country, came together to ring a bell at the famous Salvation Army Red Kettle as part of the “Bells Across America” event.
Of particular note, at a Wal-Mart store in Battle Creek, MI, Wal-Mart CEO Lee Scott joined Salvation Army National Commander Israel Gaither to make a $1 million donation on behalf of the Wal-Mart Foundation.
Wal-Mart is one of The Salvation Army’s primary corporate supporters both during the Christmas season and throughout the year. Each year, Salvation Army bell ringers staff red kettles at virtually every Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club store in the country beginning in mid-to-late November through Christmas Eve. Nationally, this fundraising amounts to around 25% of all Red Kettle giving. In 2006, the Army raised a record $117 million during the campaign, $30 million of which came directly from kettles placed in front of Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club locations nationwide.
