We’re only days away from the eagerly-awaited Red Kettle Cook-Off, presented by All-American Picnic Company, Lumina Foundation and Kroger! This year we’ve moved the festivities to Georgia Street in downtown Indy, which be filled with the sights, sounds and smells of sizzling burgers and fun activities for all ages.
The concept behind the Red Kettle Cook-Off is simple: local television and radio personalities come up with creative burger recipes and then compete to raise the most money for The Salvation Army Bed & Bread Club, a program that helps the hungry and homeless in Central Indiana. The station that brings in the most donations (including online donations leading up to the Cook-Off) and sells the most burgers wins the “Checkered Spatula” and bragging rights for the next year.
Last year’s winner, WRTV-6 anchor and reporter Drew Smith is back, but this year the field has grown to include 14 teams: WRTV-6, WISH-TV 8, WTHR 13, FOX 59, 92.3 WTTS, 93.1 WIBC, 93.9 i94, 95.5 WFMS, 97.1 Hank FM, 100.9 Radio Now, 101.9 K-Love / 90.5 Air1, 104.5 WJJK, B105.7, and 1070 The Fan.
Whew! That’s quite a list. (For a printable burger menu, click here!)
In addition to the Checkered Spatula, local food critics and bloggers will be judging the 14 burger entries and handing out a “Best Burger” award for the tastiest recipe. Of course, it wouldn’t be a cook-out without some fun and games, so Georgia Street will also be filled with your favorite sports mascots, fun games, vendor booths and music. The Colts In Motion trailer and Pacers Fan Van will be there, along with FREE street-legal 2-seater IndyCar rides courtesy of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Are you excited yet? It’s time to make lunch plans for Wednesday!
