Much of The Salvation Army’s success is due to the selfless service of hundreds of volunteers. Finding and managing all of these volunteers keeps Elizabeth, our Volunteer Coordinator, very busy. But thanks to the Northwest Indianapolis Kiwanis Club, Elizabeth’s job has gotten a little easier.
Last fall, The Northwest Indianapolis Kiwanis Club sponsored the Grassroots Marketing Internship at The Salvation Army. The purpose of the internship was to find new and creative ways to spread the word about volunteer opportunities in The Salvation Army. This Kiwanis sponsorship was made in memory of Terry Shaffer, a long time Kiwanis member and supporter of The Salvation Army. Terry volunteered countless hours of his time to The Salvation Army, many of them ringing the bell at a red kettle. Terry recently passed away and the club, and Terry’s wife Nancy, wanted to do something special to honor his dedication to service and to The Salvation Army.
The Spring 2009 Grassroots Marketing Intern is Jennifer Graves, a junior at IUPUI in Indianapolis. Last week, Jennifer had the opportunity to talk to the Kiwanis Club about the internship and what she doing for the Army. Jennifer is currently finding volunteers for a partnership between The Salvation Army and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. This unique opportunity gives volunteers a chance to see the famous track during the month of May and the Army gets $7 for every hour volunteered. Jennifer has also started using social networking sites such as Facebook to recruit volunteers for Salvation Army events. She said the internship has taught her a lot and she will definitely be doing more with The Salvation Army in the future.
