This was a sizzling hot week in Indiana, and that was certainly the case on May 6 when The Salvation Army’s annual Red Kettle Cook-Off took over Georgia Street in downtown Indy. Fifteen TV and radio stations competed head-to-head to sell the most burgers by coming up with creative, recipes to woo the downtown lunch crowd.
All-American Picnic Company fired up the grills and had the first burgers ready to go at 11:00 a.m., and our celebrity grillers – weather reporters, DJs, news anchors and radio hosts – spent the next three hours feeding the hungry crowd. With homemade signs, bullhorns and mouth-watering samples, the teams competed for customers in hopes of filling their station buckets with the most cash and winning the coveted “Checkered Spatula.”
At the end of the day, the team from RTV6 took home the prizes for Best Burger (as determined by our official food judges) and Most Money Raised with their south-of-the-border “Burger You Need NOW.” Radio Now 100.9 took home the prize for Most Money Raised in the radio division, outselling other stations with the “Every Day I’m Wafflin’ Burger.”
In addition to burgers, the crowds enjoyed music, visits from some of our favorite local team mascots, and free street legal two-seater IndyCar rides around downtown Indy. The event was fun for the entire family and a great opportunity for members of the community to give back in a meaningful way.
Red Kettle Cook-Off supports The Salvation Army’s food and shelter programs in central Indiana. In 2014, these programs provided over 509,000 meals for the hungry and more than 107,000 safe nights of shelter. Just one $10 burger purchased during Red Kettle Cook-Off funds four meals for our clients. It only takes five burgers to provide a mother and her children with a night of safe shelter.
Thank you to Kroger and Lumina Foundation for their sponsorship of this event. Thanks to their support, The Salvation Army was able to raise over $13,500! Additional donations from Indiana Pork Farmers, American Dairy Association Indiana and Dugdale Foods were also greatly appreciated. Thank you to everyone who volunteered, grilled and supported Red Kettle Kick-Off 2015!
