Thursday marked the 9th Annual Salvation Army Apple Fest. It’s an event made of partnerships with the goal of not only raising money but also awareness for homelessness intervention and prevention.
Corporate partners like Applebee’s and MCL Restaurant & Bakery along with other nonprofit organizations joined The Salvation Army on the west side of Monument Circle for a day filled with fun, games, food and music. These partners got a chance to meet members of the community and mingle with The Salvation Army’s own employees and volunteers.
Here’s a quick breakdown of the event:
To start, the weather was absolutely amazing!!!
Applebee’s provided a fantastic menu of tasty chicken creations. (The chicken fajita rollup with the chipotle sauce was pretty amazing.) All the food was cooked and prepared fresh right under their tent by a staff of smiling faces. But hey, you need Applebee’s to have an Apple Fest.
The next stop was dessert. And of course it’s not Apple fest without Apple Crisp. Chef Ian from MCL Restaurant & Bakery whipped up a divine sweet treat with just the right balance of chewy caramel and sweetness. Fast Fact: 1,000 servings of Apple Crisp=250 pounds of apples (that’s 750 apples-try peeling all those) + 35 pounds of butter + 83 pounds of brown sugar + 166 cups of oats. (Make sure you adjust the recipe accordingly should you want to make up a batch.)
Pepsi covered the beverages and Two Men and a Truck served them. What great teamwork from two of our corporate sponsors. A few lovely ladies from divisional headquarters graciously took payments for the spectacular meal. (Remember, all proceeds go to Salvation Army programs and initiatives aimed at homelessness prevention and intervention.)
The circle rocked to the sounds of Bloomington-based band Tax Brandywine. Our volunteers may have even tried to keep time while ringing the bells and manning the red kettles.
Finally, the circle was lined with booths and games. There was truly something for everyone.
A HUGE thanks to all the volunteers, employees, partners and supporters of Apple Fest 2012!!
