2010 was a year of both victories and challenges. At our Second Annual Victory Dinner, staff, supporters and friends came together to celebrate being able to carry out a successful mission – being able to serve more people than ever before. Some highlights of those victories:
- Over 1,400 people came to Army Substance Abuse Programs
- More than 79,000 safe nights were provided through our shelter and lodging programs
- 202,543 meals were served at our various locations around the city
- More than 4,100 children received coats through the Coats for Kids program
- Over 800 families benefited from our Angel Tree and Toy Shop programs
- Over 10,000 toys were collected for Toy Shop
- More than 800 volunteers assisted with Salvation Army programs
- 663 children attended Salvation Army summer camps
Because of the generosity of our supporters, we had our best Tree of Lights season ever – raising nearly $3.1 million. Now that’s an overwhelming victory and reason to celebrate!
The evening began with dinner, the year in review and an introduction to Indiana’s Interim Divisional Commander, Commissioner Ken Baillie. Commissioners Ken and Joy Baillie are serving as interim leaders in the absence of our previous leaders, Majors Richard and Vicki Amick, who transferred to our Territorial Headquarters in Chicago at the end of February 2011.
Next was a look back at the beginning of 2010, which began with a devastating earthquake in Haiti. Jerry Larsen, our Divisional Disaster Service Director, spoke about the Army’s response immediately following the earthquake and the progress of rebuilding in Haiti at the one-year anniversary mark. Also, Jerry spoke about the latest in Japan, following the earthquake and tsunami on March 11, 2011.
Our main speaker for the evening was CJ McClanahan, one of our newest Advisory Board members. CJ is the founder and president of Reachmore, a leadership training and consulting firm. He writes a column on leadership for the Indpls. Business Journal. In addition, he is the author of Thrive, a book that provides five simple strategies for living an extraordinary life. CJ is an active leader in his community having served as the president of the Penrod Society and Rainmakers. CJ was also named to the 2006 class of the Indpls, Business Journal’s “40 Under Forty”. CJ encouraged the dinner’s attendees to give more of themselves and their resources.
Most importantly, it was a time to honor the extraordinary efforts of individuals, businesses and organizations who worked alongside of us to make the 2010 victories possible. The following were recognized for their service and support:
